As soon to be parents we are expecting many bumps in the road ahead. There is no "road map" to becoming the perfect mom or dad. We know we have a lot of adjusting to do and many exciting changes to look forward to. We anticipate many learning curves on the highway of parenting and even some road blocks along the way, but that has never caused us to want to detour... we happily accept our upcoming journey. All that being said, we never thought we'd have a "crash course" before our little one had even arrived!
Last night after work Derek and I decided to run some errands so we jumped in my little VW covertible and took off. We were going down a road that is currently under construction and proceeded with caution as we knew traffic would be rather congested at this particular intersection. As we waited for our light to change so we could continue on our way, the unthinkable happened. We were rear ended by a huge pick up truck.
In shear panic, tears began to fall down my cheeks and Derek checked to see if I was alright. The truck driver got out of his car and Derek alerted him that I was expecting and that we needed medical attention as soon as possible. Fortunatly, he was a family man himself and offered to put on his emergency lights and have us follow him to the nearest hospital. Once we arrived at Methodist in McKinney, I walked into the emergency room while Derek retrieved all of the man's contact and insurance information. Soon after he met me inside.
Derek told me that there was no serious damage to the car from what he could tell and not to stress over it. I informed him that I was not seriously injured, just bruised from where the seat belt locked up at my hips in addition to back and hip soreness. But we both wanted to be extra precautious now that we had a "baby on board" so we waited for the doctor to come in. They performed an ultrasound to check on our little one and reported that everything was perfectly fine and they didn't expect any complications. We were so relieved. The tech also asked if we knew what we were having. We explained to her how the baby was a bit shy at our last appointment, and so we were going to have another look on Thursday. She asked if we wanted to know now and of course we obliged!
Needless to say, we didn't expect to find out the gender of our baby last night. We didn't have a camera, I was a mess from crying and Derek was completely pale from all of the worrying. It just goes to show you that sometimes on the road of life God doesn't always lead you down the most obvious highway. Sometimes, he takes you down a twisting back road... but luckily, you will always end up exactly where you are supposed to be. Now more than ever before are we so excited to share the news with everyone. Saturday couldn't come soon enough!
