It's Earth Day! Which would be really cool and awesome and fun if I didn't manage to kill every green thing within a mile radius of my home. Today I'm attempting to make amends with mother earth by starting small. With some helpful suggestions from my Front Porch + Backyard Pinterest board, I've put together a mini-container garden that I can use to try and turn my "black thumb" green!
I started by reading Dwell on Joy's tips on building a balanced potted plant look. In the past I would tend to buy a few of the same plant and my pot didn't really create the visual interest that I had hoped for. The thriller, filler and spiller concept makes perfect sense and is extremely simple, but something I hadn't tried.
Another Pinterest find was the idea to recycle an old wine bottle (how Earth day is that!?) to use instead of a water globe for potted plants. Any excuse to have a bottle of wine while gardening right?
Here are my results! I'm pretty happy with my first attempt. I have some ideas for improvement for my next container, but for someone with zero experience at keeping plants alive I'd say we're off to a great start! Happy Earth Day everyone!
PS. Honestly I have no idea what any of these plants are called, I bought them purely based on their "spiller, thriller or filler" qualities and their sun-friendliness. Sorry that's not more helpful!
I also have a black thumb but you may have inspired me to give it a try! Looks good!
